A recent study suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
