Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 around the world.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned more than $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Present Performance

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight consecutive team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
