The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
