The Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Because my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I shared that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the courage or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
