Pentagon Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Danger with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute contained particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and considered the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public later this week.
