The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
